Martial Arts for Kids in Spring TX: More Than Kicks and Punches

When parents bring their children to Condition 1 Combat Center for the first time, they often say the same thing: “I want them to be able to defend themselves.” By the time their kids are a few months in, those same parents are saying something different: “I did not realize how much it would change their attitude at home and at school.”

That is the real product of kids martial arts. The self-defense skills are real. The character development is what lasts.

What Kids Learn in Our Program

Our youth program starts at age four. From day one, kids are learning more than techniques — they are learning how to follow instructions, respect their training partners, manage frustration, and try hard at something difficult.

Specific curriculum areas include:

  • Striking and self-defense basics — how to protect themselves, create distance, and escape
  • Grappling fundamentals — balance, takedown defense, and basic ground control
  • Awareness and avoidance — recognizing unsafe situations and telling a trusted adult
  • Anti-bullying concepts — verbal strategies and physical responses as a last resort

Why Discipline Is the Core Skill

Parents often report that the first change they notice is not physical — it is behavioral. Kids who train at Condition 1 start saying “yes, sir” and “yes, ma’am” at home. They wait their turn in line. They listen on the first ask.

Martial arts creates a structured environment where respect is non-negotiable and effort is required. Kids respond to that structure, especially when it comes alongside genuine care from their coaches.

Our Youth Coaches

Every instructor who works with children at Condition 1 has been vetted, background-checked, and trained specifically for youth instruction. Our coaches understand child development and know how to push kids in ways that build them up rather than break them down.

Andy Reyes, one of our youth BJJ coaches, has five years of experience coaching kids and genuinely loves working with young grapplers. Tyree Jordan, our fitness and combative coach, brings years of group fitness coaching to create high-energy, engaging classes.

What to Expect from the First Class

Your child will:

  1. Be welcomed by name by a coach
  2. Learn two or three techniques with direct repetition
  3. Play games that build the same physical skills being taught
  4. Leave feeling proud of what they accomplished

We keep our youth classes fun and structured at the same time. Kids who enjoy class come back. Kids who come back get better.

A Note for Parents

You are welcome to watch. We do ask that parents stay off the mat during class — kids focus better when they are not performing for mom and dad. Most parents tell us that watching quietly from the sideline is one of their favorite parts of the week.
